As Artificial Intelligence rapidly transforms industries, many organisations are exploring its potential to reshape business processes and boost efficiency. In a recent report, Accenture found that 90% of companies are actively investigating AI or generative AI capabilities. However, the findings also indicate a critical gap in AI readiness, with fewer than 2% of companies investing in a holistic, fully operationalised, responsible AI program.
This statistic is a glaring red flag in the broader conversation about AI adoption. While many organisations are eager to leverage AI’s potential, they are failing to address one of the most pressing issues—the ethical, responsible, and regulated use of AI technologies.
Without a comprehensive responsible AI framework, companies risk significant legal, reputational, and operational consequences.
The Gap Between AI Exploration and Responsible AI
Despite the high percentage of organisations exploring AI, only a small fraction are taking the necessary steps to manage the ethical implications and risks associated with these technologies. The rapid rise of generative AI, in particular, has heightened the need for accountability, transparency, and fairness in AI systems. However, Accenture’s finding that so few organisations are investing in responsible AI programs indicates a widespread lack of preparedness.

For instance, the European Union’s AI Act seeks to regulate high-risk AI applications, requiring organisations to comply with stringent transparency and safety standards.
As AI proliferates enterprise technology stacks, these regulations will only become more demanding, meaning companies that have not invested in responsible AI programs will find it increasingly difficult to meet these evolving regulatory requirements, putting themselves at risk of fines or sanctions.

The importance of responsible AI goes beyond compliance. Responsible AI ensures that AI systems are designed with a focus on fairness, transparency, and accountability. It helps organisations mitigate risks such as biased decision-making, data privacy violations, and the lack of human oversight in critical processes.
By investing in responsible AI, companies not only protect themselves from potential legal liabilities but also build trust with their customers and stakeholders. In an age where data privacy and ethical technology use are top of mind for consumers, companies that prioritise responsible AI will have a significant competitive advantage. Transparency in how AI systems make decisions, for example, can enhance customer trust, while efforts to mitigate bias can improve brand reputation.
However, many organisations underestimate the importance of responsible AI. Accenture’s data reveals that most companies focus heavily on the technological side of AI adoption—investing in infrastructure, tools, and algorithms—but overlook the broader societal implications. This focus on technology, rather than ethics, has resulted in an alarming gap between AI exploration and responsible AI implementation.
Building a Holistic Responsible AI Program
The companies that do take responsible AI seriously are already seeing benefits. Accenture highlights that the organisations with a fully operationalised responsible AI program are better equipped to manage risks, comply with regulations, and drive positive outcomes. But what does a holistic responsible AI program look like?
At its core, it involves creating clear governance structures for AI development and deployment. This includes setting up AI ethics committees, establishing guidelines for responsible AI use, and appointing senior leaders to oversee AI ethics. Companies such as Microsoft and IBM have led the way in this regard, publicly committing to AI ethics and investing in frameworks that ensure their AI systems are aligned with ethical principles.
Responsible AI programs also require continuous training and education for employees. AI is a complex and evolving technology, and its ethical implications are often not fully understood by non-technical staff. By investing in education and training, organisations can ensure that all employees—from data scientists to executives—are aware of the ethical challenges associated with AI and can make informed decisions.
Finally, responsible AI necessitates transparency and accountability. This means being transparent about how AI models make decisions, how data is used, and how risks are mitigated. It also involves setting up mechanisms for auditing AI systems and addressing any issues that arise over time.
The Role of Leadership in AI Ethics
A critical factor in developing a responsible AI program is strong executive sponsorship. Accenture’s research shows that organisations with CEO-level involvement in AI initiatives experience significantly higher returns on investment—about two and a half times greater—than those without such leadership. Executive leadership is essential not only for securing the necessary financial investment but also for driving cultural change within the organisation.
Leaders who prioritise responsible AI send a clear message that ethics and transparency are core values. This helps foster a company-wide commitment to building AI systems that are not only effective but also fair and trustworthy.
Bridging the Gap
The fact that so many companies are failing to appropriately invest in responsible AI programs is a wake-up call for the broader business community. As AI continues to evolve, the risks associated with irresponsible AI use will only grow. Companies must take immediate action to build comprehensive, organisation-wide, responsible AI frameworks that prioritise ethics, transparency, and compliance.
Organisations that fail to address this issue risk falling behind in an increasingly competitive and regulated environment. By investing in responsible AI, companies can not only avoid potential pitfalls but also unlock the full value of AI while building trust with their customers and stakeholders.
